Northumberland Tory Leader needs to get out more.

What sort of person gets themselves into a position of becoming ‘absolutely delighted’ at the collapse of the Northern leg of HS2, a project designed to be an economic miracle for the North to be replaced with a few miles of dual carriageway that is simply an extension of the road to nowhere.

Its 77ml from Morpeth in Northumberland up across the the Borders and East Lothian and those areas require 54.6 ml of new dual carriageway to link Scotland with England’s multi carriageway system via the A1 so the ecstatic phrasing used by Councillor Glen Sanderson the very supportive of the Prime Minister Leader of Northumberland County Council should be taken with a pinch of salt.

In his panic to spread the jam so thin you can see through it Rishi Sunak is still hell bent on keeping a poor travelling workforce trapped in the Northlands to service the need for cheap labour in London and the South-East.

If the Tories were serious about improving Northumberland’s lot they should have announced the full dualling of the A1 along with a similar project to dual the A69 from Hexham to Carlisle. Not a cheap scheme to keep A1 Marie Trevelyan happy and a dual carriageway to bypass Blyth Town Centre altogether and whisk shoppers directly into Cramlington and crush Blyth’s retail offer into history.

Sceptics include, Berwick Councillor Isabel Hunter, who represents the Berwick West with Ord ward on the county council. Cllr Hunter, who also owns a haulage business, has long campaigned for the A1 to be dualled all the way up to the Scottish border, and is wary of celebrating after a series of broken promises from successive governments going back to 1990.

She, like many Northumberland residents believe this is just another spin story from the split tongued Tories with many asking how can anyone praise a project that achieves nothing in real terms and a card on social media asked when the County Council will make an application to change the designation of the road from the A1 to the great north road C1. 

So Councillor Sanderson, instead of sitting in your armchair watching your winter wheat on your farm grow to increase your wealth further you need to get out and about and see what really needs to be done to bring an economic miracle to the North and it's not 9Ml of dual carriageway past your house.
