Remember the Tory Politics about Ashington?

Well they are doing it again so don’t believe them this time.

Conservative Councillor Wayne Daley said to Labour members in March 2017 after the release of the conservative manifesto which contained the end of ARCH, “Don’t worry it's only politics”. He went on to become the highly remunerated Deputy Leader to the personally disgraced Cllr. Peter Jackson. A while later at the height of the Conservatives bullying campaign he left to dwell under a stone near Bilbo Baggins place, why? ‘Because it was only Politics’.

Following on from the Chronicle’s investigations into equality and equity in Council spend by Northumberland’s Conservative led County Council our codgerly chat this week held in Ashington, brought up the LOSS of £100m to Ashington through the stripping out of projects from Ashington in 2017. When coupled with the massive spend to keep county hall in Morpeth empty and beautified along with the cost of running County Hall in Morpeth since the energy crisis caused by Tory mismanagement of the UK’s finances. The people of Ashington, Prudhoe and Cramlington have lost out while the Sandersonites on the Council have poured favours on Ponteland and Morpeth whist messing up the £90M River Blyth basin scheme and losing 8000 potential jobs to benefit the whole of South East Northumberland.

On the move from Morpeth to Ashington the international auditor EY found that the move would benefit Ashington aiding its deprivation with there being no detriment to Morpeth at all.

Following heavy political criticism from the Conservatives who were desperate to find detriment for Morpeth EY left the council never to return.

A clue to whether the Conservatives will deliver anything at all in Ashington sits within the BBC report on the cabinet meeting where the announcement of £30M worth of funding was made. Long Serving Tory who is not part of the Morpeth Mob group, Councillor Colin Horncastle had an amnesic moment forgetting how to be Conservatively political to the public when he told the BBC  the scheme would take "many years to pull it together".

So sometimes the truth can emerge from the driven by politics lips of Tories but not often!

Labour had agreed to spend £80m+ in Ashington to boost trade and bring jobs to a Town which housed the largest but only classified as second most deprived area in Northumberland.

Its was broken down as follows

Portland Park it consists of five plots with 3 now either occupied or signed up for occupation –

Plot 1 is Asda (over 200 jobs)

Plot 2 is Ashington Leisure Centre complete with pools spa and library, run by Active Northumberland (over 100 jobs) £21M

Plot 3 is NCC Ashington Hub new county hall, (over 900 jobs) £32M

Plot 4 and 5 are in development with discussions with Further Education provider and

retail/office negotiators – There’s also a new bus station for Arriva

Wansbeck Square redevelopment when the Ashington Blyth and Tyne rail link opens, NCC have paid £11.2m for studies to ensure the line is safe for redevelopment

Council investment in Station road reopening to one-way through traffic £5.4m and short term parking revamp links the traditional town centre, Portland Park and the Wansbeck Square development.

Car Parks and Highways modernisations £10.1M.

Report to cabinet April 2015.

The LibDems delivered ASDA, Labour delivered the Leisure Centre, the bus station and bus depot near McDonalds, the reopening of Station Road, the north’s only shared space for traffic and pedestrians and most of the highways repairs to complement the work undertaken. The Tories Politics stopped the lot and left the famous ‘ASHINGTON WHOLE’. https://www.facebook.com/theashingtonhole/?locale=en_GB

We codgers have been looking at cinema costs with the independent cinema office whose most recent estimate for top end 2023 multiplex cinemas land, build and fit is £2000/sqm. This would cover the cost of a 2.5 Acre building, something where you could park a good number of Jumbo Jets under cover.

The estimate for a capital spend of that size just like the cinema in Blyth is way over the top as the Council or ADVANCE its arms length company already own the land on both sites and its costs will be have been written off in the depths of time or will the new cinema contain a 2.5 Acre swimming pool to be operated in competition with Active Northumberland? Or is it just Politics. We codgers think so.
