Northumberland Tories Are they running down Council Housing to sever the estate from the Council?

 

One of the most regular complaints on social media is how long Council homes stay empty in Northumberland and how shockingly pathetic the Council’s repairs system is with the third highest number of comments centre around how potential residents feel disillusioned and helpless when they are stuck in the homefinder system.

It is stated on the Council’s website that Northumberland Homefinder is a Choice Based Lettings (CBL) scheme offering increased options for housing by including private rented properties and low-cost home ownership properties. Many feel the choice is Hobson’s!

Residents who need a move due to the Conservatives bedroom tax and those who need housing through the effects of the current economic crisis forcing them from their homes are finding out of touch advice branding them as intentionally homeless and their plight is simply made worse by the organisation who is democratically elected to help them.

In June this year Michael Gove popped up to Blyth on his way to have himself photographed at a disco in Aberdeen and announced an additional £20m to assist the Council’s housing problems in its largest Town, Blyth. The official list of the split of that £20M of capital funding is set out in its press release below.

The Council does not appear to rate Council Housing very highly and does not have a qualified housing officer as its housing head. That open knowledge among tenants and their wider families is often stated as the reason they can’t hold onto staff and have a massive shortage of craft workers and take almost forever to turn empty properties around. Tenants are worried that their homes will be outsourced by the current Conservative administration and most don’t want to become part of a distantly managed housing association.

The £20M heralded by the Conservatives is coveted capital cash by Councillors from outside Blyth and its said on social media that officers are under pressure to spend it outside Blyth and with the head of finance reporting at an open meeting that capital expenditure needs to be massively cut back and some put back shows how weak the democratic councillor groups covet levelling up cash, with Ian Levy MP deciding to ditch Blyth at the next general election deciding instead to run in Cramlington with Killingworth if he survives the well publicised police investigations into his activities.

During the last Labour administration at County Hall over 400 new Council homes were built or bought and added into the estate. The turn around for empty homes was down to 11 days which included reletting by professional officers Up to press the Tories haven’t built any since 2017 and are only planning a dozen in the near future with some void properties left untouched for almost a year according to neighbours on social media.
