Kept secret as usual for the administration in office at County Hall in Morpeth until the bitter end, Northumberland’s Tory led Unitary all-purpose County Council has just revealed its darkest secrets as its shipwrecked budget is debated at its Local Area Committee meeting in Blyth.
The Council’s net income from Government has been slashed by well over £50m, planned service cuts headings are vague but departmental cuts figures are massive leading ordinary people towards being concerned if the services which they and their families rely on most will be hit, closed or simply crucified to ensure Northumberland County Council presses on and completes the Tories pet projects as time is running out for them during this their final year as a administration in office.
To deliver those pet projects which includes the much hated destruction of Blyth Town centre in the name of levelling up, the Tory Leadership are planning to strip another £24m from its dwindling reserves and still borrow more cash, currently they are planning to spend over £19m servicing debt! It's a disgrace which will drag down any future Council which follows the madness of spending now and shows off the ‘Kings new clothes’ to its ever suffering public.
SIGOMA, the organisation that speaks on behalf of municipal local authorities, has reported: councils have now faced half a decade of single-year settlements, hindering their ability to effectively plan ahead. At a recent appearance at the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee, the Secretary of State stated he did not want to “gaze into the crystal ball” for the future of local government finance. Unfortunately, single-year settlements force councils to do just that.
The representative bodies of Councils at all levels agree that only a few Councils will survive the anchor chains set before them as Council grant cuts coupled with the taxing of pensioners through fiscal drag is being used as the source for Government giveaways in this spring's Government budget to steal the headlines as we run towards a General Election.
Northumberland County Council could have been one of the few survivors but for the gross mismanagement by the Councils single party cabinet over the last six years, the massive let down and failure of not delivering a well promised by all Tories 8000 jobs boom in Cambois to relieve poverty and deprivation across South East Northumberland is a prime example of that mismanagement.
The indecency and lack of prudence from Northumberland Tories will leave the next Council for Northumberland after the May 2025 elections in a serious insidious position unable to deliver the most basic needs of its residents and a glance at its neighbours in Cumbria and Westmorland who split into two separate corporate entities may be the way forward for Northumberland.
Big isn’t beautiful in the scenic County of Northumberland but madness and greed appears to be top of the agenda for Northumberlands dreadful Tory administration.
