Nearly a decade of false dawns and broken promises has destroyed confidence in AMT.From Anne-Marie Trevelyan’s (AMT) first success in removing the long serving in the Borders,Liberal Democrats from office as the natural MP’s for rural Berwick upon Tweed when Alan Beith stood down in 2015. Ever since she has rattled on about changing the death trap of a backlane running up through Northumberland into a proper dual carriageway linking Scotland with England which bears the laughable highway number, the A1.
From 2015 until the present day her promises have grown in line with Pinocchio’s nose as her list of failures to deliver this simple and cheap in comparison with three and four lane highways across the rest of the UK road renewal. Yet her nose didn’t shrink any when the promise from her Government was to simply dual the road from Morpeth to Ellingham joining two dual carriageways together developing a nine mile link between Morpeth and Felton where it joins another dual carriageway and then a proposed 8.5Ml from Alnwick North to Ellingham where the safe operating highway will peter out.
This project leaves AMT’s target 21 deadly miles short of the Border with Scotland. Yet AMT has praised this short and low cost highway provision as some sort of success when the whole of the travelling County knows she’s fatally for many, wrong.
Today, another set back has been announced from Westminster and the ‘short bit’ to keep Northumberland people quiet has been put back until at least after the next General Election as a nine month stop has been put on the project. The failure of both AMT and her Government will dump the project onto the desk of a Labour Transport Minister who have been a little disingenuous in the past but not as openly hopeless as AMT who when serving in the Cabinets of both Boris Johnson and Liz Truss and when holding the Transport Secretary job in Government did absolutely nothing to help her constituents travel North and South through the County safely.
The history of the denial of politicians to provide safe road travel for Northumberland’s population and the travelling public from other areas has been well documented by the excellent reporter James Robinson in his article in the Hexham Courant and you will see AMT taking the biscuit when it comes to undelivered promises which head up her personal manifesto which she has failed to deliver on for almost a decade.

On TV this evening AMT told the reporters that she was ‘Tailgating Ministers’ on this issue. We codgers thought it would be better if she told residents and travelers who use this road that she was ‘gaslighting them’ from her position on high.
Berwick upon Tweed’s leading ‘voice of the people’ independent councillor Georgina Hill, who represents the Berwick East ward on the county council, told the press: Ms Trevelyan - who pledged to dual the A1 as part of her election campaign in 2015, when the first won the seat - would be 'embarrassed' by the delay and accused the Government of "treating voters like fools.
She said: "Residents will now have very little hope about the prospect of the A1 being dualled between Morpeth to Ellingham and absolutely no hope of dualling up to Berwick. This is incredibly embarrassing for the local Tory MP who set her stall on dualling the A1.
"This further delay by the Government is only to spare blushes and has obviously been timed to come after the next General Election. The fact they are treating voters like fools will, understandably, fuel further anger and bitter disappointment."

As an article from the codgers: we will finish with a line from James Robinson’s brilliant researched article which sums up AMT and her seriously dreadful promises on this issue:
‘September 2023 – The Government confirmed it would be delaying the decision a further nine months, leading to a furious reaction from across Northumberland and the wider North East’.
Will that fury be sitting there like Captain Flint, Long John Silvers parrot or will A1 Marie be able to string the New Berwick Constituency voters along and still pick up her ‘Pieces of Eight’ after the forthcoming General Election?
