Prudhoe Can you use the same vote winner twice?

Prudhoe, the town that Northumberland County Council has forgotten about when it comes to capital spend and whose residents are being pump primed yet again at a cheap rate, using a Tory 360° turnaround trick as its unprincipled bargain basement catalyst to win votes.

Early in 2017 when the Tory’s whose national popularity was at an all-time high Northumberland Conservatives chose who they wanted to work with when the expected happened and they would take over the the County Council running it from their Castle Morpeth centered base.

To do that they needed to oust the Labour party from its heartlands and develop new areas where they could back off and simply introduce ‘new tricks’ at each election time. 

The already chosen Tory Chief Executive, Mrs Daljit Lally in cahoots with the Tories began their Prudhoe rout by planning to transfer youth services from the 52-year-old East End facility to the Fuse Media Centre, on Moor Road without a report or even a whisper to Cabinet members at County Hall, with the prospective Tory candidate whipping up Labour Councillor Tony Reed who wasn’t aware his own team knew nothing about this militant act.

The Labour Leader at the time put a stop to the shenanigans but it was too late, the damage had been done, in May 2017 up stepped Tory glory boy Gordon Stewart as the saviour of Prudhoe who didn’t halt the Tories from then closing the centre themselves a little later.

By 2021 even after the Tories had put a halt to Prudhoes’ new planned shopping precinct they did nothing for Prudhoe but the anti-left movement in the national press meant they knew they didn't have to bother winning votes as the Tories were well ahead in the polls. Even the bullying of their chosen right arm CEO Daljit Lally, the sacking of the Tories Council leader Peter Jackson and Labour’s exposure of how areas outside of Prudhoe have been cosseted and Prudhoe ignored on all spend in particular Leisure spend followed by the now famous Caller Review into the Tories at County Hall and dodgy reports blown out of the water by their new external auditor didn’t change things but the new national picture and polling data has ruptured the comfort of Conservatives County-wide.

So, with those glory days having gone and Northumberland Conservatives struggling as their mismanagement of Council finances has left them in a dire situation they have begun stretching their arms and scrapped about in the bottom of the near empty crock of gold and come up with £2.6m in a vote winning deal for a an academy school in Morpeth, a business they have no democratic control over and decided to offer the good folks of Prudhoe a mear £27K supposedly to keep their Prudhoe fans happy and Gordon Stewart in his seat by reviving the East End youth centre via a feasibility study that Prudhoe residents via their Town Council must also find funding for.

Northumberland Conservatives record on youth is and has been abysmal since 2017 as youth work is a non-statutory Council function they have slashed it so badly that anti-social behaviour is becoming almost a norm across Northumberland keeping up the derisory sums only helping three areas across the County and trying to dump all other youth services onto hard pressed parish and town Councils, charities and churches.

Their treatment of youth as a national party has become so poorly managed that John Roberts, the chief executive of online electrical goods retailer AO World via the Times newspaper, has urged the Government to "radically" change "the way we prioritise and deploy spending on young people". He argues that improvements in youth services could boost employability, cut crime, and improve mental health. 

He said: "There's no Prime Minister that would stand up and say, 'We are going to close a thousand schools and we're going to get rid of 5,000 teachers', but over in the youth sector, that's exactly what they've done." It is, he says, an "understatement to say that politicians aren't doing enough. The problem is that kids don't vote, so politicians don't care."

His statement aligns exactly with Northumberland’s very conservative attitude towards youth services but because the East Centre has won votes via its closure they have decided to drizzle a little cash outside Castle Morpeth’s bounds and spin new yarns in Prudhoe as they launch a dodgy ‘Task Force’ to look at where they spend next and use well practiced rhetoric to stretch promises right across the County that will be delivered on 12th of never.
