You don’t need to visit Uganda to get a good view of the ‘Rift’ just visit County Hall in Morpeth.

 

The utterly amazing unraveling of a well established local political team is taking place in public as a former leader of Northumberland County Council (NCC) ensures his successor is stretched out on the rack.

Former Leader of Council, Councillor Peter Jackson opened up to the press to question ‘Governance’ at the Council over its dealings with funding from the joint Governments Borderlands deal expanding the rift between supporters of the current leadership of the council and those sitting outside the very secretive Cabinet team led by Councillors Sanderson and Wearmouth.

The Council which has slashed back on funding and services to a level where grass isn’t being cut over most of the urban South-East of the County is the ‘responsible organisation’ handling £452m of public cash yet 60 of the 67 democratically elected members of this behind the tile covert Council team have little or no idea what's going on unless they read about it in the Scottish borders newspapers.

Demands for a report to the Councils audit committee which will seep through scrutiny committees and full council over time have come on the back of a number of sources with Councillor Jackson's appeal being supported by independent Councillor Anne Dale from Stockfield and Councillor Georgina Hill who has expressed fears regarding the direction of travel of NCC as cash handlers for Borderlands as the huge project to modernise the Maltings Theatre has bumped the buffers with an £8m shortfall in project funding.

The Labour Party have also questioned the Borderlands input as Councillors Lynne Grimshaw, Liz Simpson and Eileen Cartie are demanding to know what the outcomes of promises made in 2021 regarding Borderlands projects in Ashington, Newbiggin by the Sea and Blyth are as progress on the ground has been negligible, whilst the reporting as described as stage 4 of projects has been confined to cabinet reports only as the grayness of governance at NCC is questioned by all parties involved.

This whole scenario illustrates the massive rift in Northumberland’s administration with the Leader of Council and his Deputy turning up at all sorts of meetings to ensure secrets aren’t leaked from the core while Councilors who are denied access to much information at all and have been threatened in losing their homes on at least two occasions if they ask questions that their constituents want answers to has torn the Conservatives apart and they now act as a series of disparate groups with the infighting spilling over into the public arena.
