When LibDem Leader Jeff Reid, a Blyth Town and County Councillor led Northumberland County Council from 2008 until 2013 he did very little to help the Town and his administration began the rundown by embracing the early years of austerity forcing the giant Westgate House to close within days of his leaving office.
The shocking loss of Blyth’s largest store was not only the culmination of five years of dismal politics and serious attempts to have North Tyneside Conservatives manage services delivered across Northumberland but in public he expressed his innermost thoughts and labelled ‘Blyth a dump’.
He may have apologised for his faux pas but he has often publicly said he shops in Cramlington therefore his knowledge of what Blyth people need and want appears to be based on his inner bias.
Time has moved on and in the ensuing years Labour and their arms length regeneration company ARCH reopened Westgate House as three large units and modernised the poundstretcher building in an attempt to keep the town vibrant.
ARCH was dragged down by Councillor Peter Jackson’s conservatives who turned it and the Council itself into seven private companies now known as ADVANCE Northumberland.
Legal and cost issues have dogged ADVANCE under the Tory regime with Councillors allegedly threatened with the loss of their homes if they questioned decisions made elsewhere, but the company are now well locked into the venomously hated Tory destruction of Blyth Town Centre, with the closure of its shopping mall and its current demolition an element that’s all part of their sad levelling up program for Northumberland’s largest town.
Yet who is leading on this destruction?
Councillor Jeff Reid who has been placed in as Chairman of ADVANCE Northumberland and according to reports that have appeared on social media supposedly employed on a five year contract complete with a huge remuneration package similar to that of an MP.
People believe this is a slap across the face for Blyth residents and that the man who called ‘Blyth a Dump’ is living his dream by creating something worse, turning Blyth from a dump into a lifeless shanty!
