North-east Investment Zone Tories biggest levelling down project so far?

 

A year on from the last general election in 2019 a full blown series of explosive announcements was made by the Tories in Northumberland that they had been to meet with their ministers and 8000 jobs would be created centred around the then recently hailed Britvolt battery plant to be developed in Cambois, South-east Northumberland.

It was to be the panacea for growth in the extremely deprived town of Blyth in Northumberland the Government announced the ‘gift’ of £20m to Blyth, Northumberland’s largest Town with Cllr Wojciech Ploszaj the Councils 'business person’ along with Councillor Sanderson also announcing in 2021 that Blyth would be transformed through “The funding awarded to Blyth from the Towns Fund is almost £33m across Future High Streets Fund, Accelerated Towns Fund and the Town Deal” to be added to from County Council reserves and he went on to magnanimously declare “This will enable us to deliver the £70m Energising Blyth Programme combined with support from the county council and our partners to have a transformational impact on the town. Followed by “This huge investment and joint commitment will help us to boost the town’s burgeoning international reputation in offshore wind and clean energy and make a real difference to the community.”

Councillor Sanderson then loaded up the team to design and select the spend to make a ‘difference’ with his Deputy, the secretive Councillor Richard Wearmouth in charge and have the group ‘’Chaired’ by local businessman and transport magnate Alan Ferguson.

And what a difference it's going to be, with the Tories building a Cinema and ‘Culture’ centre on Blyth’s marketplace that many local people didn’t want and the purchase of its shopping mall the ‘Keel Row’ to close it down and demolish it, with the team Councillor Sanderson set up alleged to be more interested in boosting reputations than saving the town centre for residents.

Time moves on and as the wounds caused by this closed shop decision making by Northumberland Conservatives after their complete and utter failure at delivering a battery plant after getting involved with not one but two businesses that were and are unable to deliver, the Government announced another change of emphasis, revealing that the jobs proclaimed mainly for South-east Northumberland, 8000 jobs will be crushed and they are now predicting that across the region from Durham’s netpark through to Sunderland via South Tyneside to Blyth the new combined authority to be kickstarted in May 2024 may develop 4000 new jobs by 2030.

What a comedown for Blyth, and someone needs to tell the public what levelling up is actually about apart from a cover for disappointment.

This new regeneration scheme, heralded by Northumberland Conservatives and supported by Councillor Sanderson is valued at only £16m per year for 10 years and covers an area where one million people reside has not yet been formalised and a date for March this year is set but how will Councillor Sandersons colleagues on the new North-east combined authority deal with his wish to spend levelling up cash outside the ‘New Zone areas as his new ‘Energy Central Institute’ is to be developed in Blyth Town Centre on the about to be demolished Keel Row site and won’t receive the tax breaks it needs to survive in competition as only developments within  the Port of Blyth and its industrial corridor in Cambois will get the help it will need to survive, luckily the Energy Central learning hub currently advertising for students will pick up any future benefits as its sits within the ports bounds but will Blyth Town Centre be left with South East Northumberland’s ‘New Hole’ as the Tories on the County Council are very keen on them?

If built It may become a white elephant very quickly indeed as both Sunderland and South Tyneside have land available within the ‘safe zones’ to support energy students with both areas already dealing with STEM students and when the Northumberland Line opens this year with its link with the Tyne and Wear metro  it will be easy for students to be whisked from South-east Northumberland to either cheaper to run site.

Vultures picking over last of Council Cash as Gove admits additional funding won’t stop Councils going bust.

 

Michael Gove came out in the press to warn councils that the agreed £500m extra he has been instructed to dole out won't save Councils from going under this year, as most who receive the cash will have it sucked from their purse immediately by care services which is grossly underfunded in the cinderella fashion yet its ugly sisters are dragging down councils nationwide following dreadful austerity hits over the last 13 years.

So many councils are in difficulty that bodies which have relied on them for their own funding are queuing around the block to get a last piece of the action before the bottom falls from their own as well as their former council sponsors' pants.

Arts programming, housing renewal, theaters, community centres, youth assistance, sports delivery etc With many councils having to close buildings people have come to rely on as the cash runs out, listed building maintenance as well as highways repairs, services to children, country parks, drainage, road sweeping and some refuse activities will be reduced to the minimum nationally.

Leaders of Councils some of whom have been taking a similar route to the Ostrich under pressure have now had to shake off the sand, sit up and take notice as some of the cleverer humps on their backs strike out like rattlesnakes to take the last of Councils cash reserves to have their little bit of ‘Little Britain Guaranteed to get the scrapings from the bottom of the barrel.

In Northumberland the noise is coming from those who like to run places but can never be bothered to put themselves up for election as people like them may put the bite on, and in their dreams they know how bad they really are.

In Northumberland it appears that the codgers social media run around has located Civic Societies as the agents of bone picking and have allegedly written en-masse to Councillor Glen Sanderson and his unsmiling boss Councillor Dicky Wearmouth with demands which are beyond the pale’.

It appears that Hexham Civic Society who have relied on the local town council for help over recent eons are now struggling and they feel stymied thay can’t get help or cash to aid the Queens Hall or the now abandoned bus station in the Town as the town council is as badly off as the County Council as its run by the same Tories who have wasted millions on and at County Hall.

Social Media has also exposed that Scottish Councils Involved in the Borderlands projects allegedly appear to be sitting on £8m needed to gap fund Berwicks new theatre build. It's been noted that Berwicks civic society expect that Councillors Wearmouth and Sanderson find that cash and quick but as has been reported in the mainstream press they have dwindled the last of their once vast reserves and can’t assist those who now are causing them problems.

Other societies are also hammering on County Halls doors and it's been said by social media wags that Councillor Wearmouth now wishes he had upgraded the fall-out shelters at County Hall when he was spending £millions of public funds refurbishing this now empty Council Office block so that he and Glen can while away a few months playing monopoly with bank of toytown cash until May 2025 when people may have forgotten their names and they can slip out under the cover of darkness and hope some elite landlord will rent them a hovel in a distant wasteland.

Labour and the Greens are right to question waste when reserves have reduced from £339,000,000 down to less than £45M in six years!

Labour and the Northumberland Green Party are right to question the demoralising financial position the Tories whose spend, spend, spend on chumley projects over the last six years has depleted the coffers at County Hall in Northumberland where much of the waste has been centred and plans set which have failed time and time again.

The lack of prudence from Councillor Sanderson the Leader of Council who was also one of the Leaders at Castle Morpeth Council which went bust in similar circumstances a number of years ago so he is experienced in not being able to manage the public’s money.

In 2017 the Tories following a campaign of untruths took over from Labour who left £339M in reserve. The Tories have simply blown the lot, and in their proposal to remove another £24m to bankroll some other pally project or other with the cash will as both Councillor Dickinson and Councillor Morphet have correctly said, leave the Council without any reserves at all by 2018.

What has it been wasted on? Here’s just a small taster:

Seven years of waste is headlined by some peculiar findings from the codgers group such as:

*Massive personal indemnity costs for Conservative Councillors against developers personally taking legal action against them.

*Huge unpublished six year long spend on modernising County Hall in Morpeth.

*Major costs set against turning the Council and its ALMO’s into seven separate companies.

*Colossal costs engaging nationally renowned auditors, police authorities, investigators and legal advisors for the public to find almost seven years later that their current auditor Mazaars declared there was no criminality at all in ARCH.

*Compensating drivers at huge expense to the public purse for pothole damage to their cars.

*Shelling out big sums when planning decisions have had to be overturned by national inspectors.

*Forking out kings ransoms to an academy school in Hexham which the Council has and will never have a managing influence over.

*Unknown costs set against the failed battery plant and appertaining business developments within the confines of the river Blyth leaving Northumberland’s largest town worse off than ever.

*Immense costs set against removing officers who had the gall to smile at a Labour Councillor in passing running the public purse down super rapidly.

*The public are counting the cost of the lack of input into Cramlington’s South West Sector with developers getting away without safe links into Cramlington Town Centre leaving residents and their children to cross main roads to access public transport without any planned safe crossing routes.

*Buying the Keel Row centre in Blyth for an undisclosed sum from the Duke of Northumberland’s Estates Department to pull it down against the wishes of the voting public.

*Paying for the Max Caller report and bypassing a section 114 report with fictional statements.

& on and on and on.

And what has been said by the Castle Morpeth Mob? ‘were going to pay the debt off later’

Most of us in the coders group won’t ever see that day and the younger generation will be dragged down by the albatross of eight years of raging Tory bad financial management and shockingly poor decision making hanging from their necks.
