Northumberland Conservatives. How broken are we?

 

Unbelievably, following an appeal from the Leader of Northumberland Conservatives on the County Council, Councillor Glen Sanderson, that matters which may have been deemed unlawful by the Council's legal advisors, should be left under the carpet and accepted as “lessons that need to be learned” have been torn wide open by a former Tory Council Leader and the assistant of a local MP.

Councillor Peter Jackson has deemed the payments to outgoing officers “illegal” at this week's Audit Committee of the County Council.

Even after a warning from the Council’s legal advisors about the use of the word ‘illegal’ when referring to payments made to outgoing statutory officers he was backed up by Councillor Nick Oliver who works for Ian Levy MP according to his declarations of interest report. 

Councillor Oliver demanded that the Police be called to investigate. He said: "This is about accountability. We have learnt something, but not everything, about where processes failed - but we have no accountability.

"We know there was more than £1 million in unlawful payments. There are laws about the misuse of public funds. If somebody has broken those laws, they're illegal.

"Surely that could go to the police? 

Referring matters to the Police appears to be a regular and common statement given by Councillor Oliver who were sure didn’t want the Police called when he and another submitted their own reports to a previous audit committee to have possible false statements legitimised by committee or when he failed to pay his dues to his own Council for his own family business which owed £31,000 in business rates, when he sat as the Councillor lead on finance.

But we believe the Council’s Audit Committee was being used to destroy the reputation of its current Leader by the factional Conservative group and its ragged political bias on so many matters which has split the County Councils attention from delivering services to people to self satisfying Schadenfreude,the joy over some harm or misfortune suffered by another.

The retorts made by Councillors Jackson, Oliver and Cessford, reported by the Chronicle sit directly in opposition to the attitude and public face being delivered by Councillor Glen Sanderson and his Deputy, Councillor Richard Wearmouth and is tantamount to rebellion against the current leadership although the past history of two of the protagonists may lead to their lack of ability to mount a coup, so sniping from the sidelines aiming to destroy the reputation of their Leader and his Deputy may have to remain their only success. 

Very level headed Labour Councillor Lynne Grimshaw made an appeal for calm amongst this storm and the Councils legal advisor condemned the use of the word illegal for activity and payments made to remove statutory officers between 2017 and today.

The whole scenario appears very murky indeed and when the dark side of the Conservative Group emerges to attack the ‘Secret Council’ for getting this wrong then it shows that the functionality of decision making by Northumberland Conservatives has collapsed and failed the public who really need answers as to why services are not being delivered not reports about infighting among a collapsed administration.

Councils Care and Well-being Chair Criticised for Comments regarding suicide, and his Council doesn’t row back on destroying the lives of the mentally ill?

 

Under the ‘secret society’ which Northumberland County Council has become over the last six years the public have seen problem after problem swept under the doormat of the massively expensive to run, modernise and maintain County Hall on the edge of Morpeth, a town where its said that a Conservative Mafia Group steer their troops against anyone who asks questions regarding their closed regime.

Recently this festering attitude towards the release of information about how public money is spent and where its been steered towards has hit the headlines with features in Private Eye’s ROTTEN BOROUGHS with the local press and opposition members of Council, forcing the Chairperson of the Council’s Care and Well-being scrutiny panel to apologise following his critical outburst against those with mental health issues that may lead to suicide.

But the whole Council attitude is being brought into question through their treatment of a resident of the County who simply wanted answers to how his cash was being spent and where!

A Mr Michael Walls attended a couple of Council meetings, asked some questions and the Chair of the Council Barry Flux had him arrested.

This is probably not because Mr Walls was impertinent enough to actually ask questions the public would like the answers to.

Some have said it's more likely because Councillor Flux has led the change to the Council’s constitution to only allow any questions and comments by opposition members to last a maximum ten minutes on any item. It appears that Councillor Flux paramount need is to make sure meetings, which are now reduced to only six times a year are minimised in case the opposition members of the Council get their teeth into a secret that has to be explained.

It's been said on social media that Mr Walls has been served with punitive costs by the Council’s legal department adding up to hundreds of thousands of pounds for his temerity for seeking answers to spend which most of the nations councils publish openly and make available for residents to view.

He has lost his home and his moderately profitable business through the Council’s attitude towards him, when instead of being arrested and punished any caring council who holds the public responsibility towards public health, care and well-being of it's residents would look to service his obvious mental health needs and not sentence him to worse punishment than jail.

He is now condemned to living in an old van.

This attitude is coming from a Council famous for its response to the national Foot and Mouth epidemic, with social media comment asking why the Council has drifted so far back with its help for Humans when its spend for helping animals is an accepted part of its policy bundle.

Mr Walls is fighting back but without help from the public and the mainstream press his voice and his solo effort is being minimised and unless greater openness of his case is spread around the support he needs will be arrowed against him and members of Northumberland County Council will have to hang their heads in shame particularly the chairperson of the Care and Well-being scrutiny panel which is set up to nurture and aid people in a similar position to Mr Walls.

‘Blyth Matters’ It's time we called out the gentrifying town planners and remind them that we (the town's residents) don't want a flash market square with the rest of Blyth becoming a ghost town?

Blyth, for our international readers, is being stripped of its Commercial Heart by a Tory County Council in the name of ‘LEVELLING UP’. using cash set aside by Government to keep Conservative MP’s in Red Wall areas in the local limelight coupled with the economic crash driving many towards poverty in a Town with some of the highest deprivation levels in England pre Liz-Truss.

Is it me  or has our Council been going around with rose tinted glasses on.

Investing money in another way to destroy Blyth market place.

Millions (being spent) on so called beautifying the town centre whilst driving out the last of the market traders.

More Traders were turning up over the last year finally giving Blyth another chance only to be sold out by a blind council full of planners with big ideas but deaf to the people.

Yes we’ll have a beautiful market square but it will be surrounded by empty derelict shops.

Wilko’s are gone, bargain buys and Argos gave up with Blyth.

I drove down Waterloo road Saturday and can only say that I’ve seen better Sundays.

The Council are leaving it to individuals to invest in our future like Gordons cafe, Pretty Shabby and the new owners of Dollys.

The only other investors are greedy landlords who are doubling the shop rents as they can use them as tax breaks when they are empty to cover their property portfolios in the south.

Even the old Spartans club has been left to rot  as a tax dodge by its midlands owners.

It's time we called out these so-called gentrifying town planners and reminded them that we don’t want a flash market square with the rest of Blyth becoming a ghost town.

I have been pushing for a Christmas market celebration with entertainment and a Santa with goodies for those struggling this year.

I was shot down in favour of market gentrification.

We need to organise a more powerful chamber of trade who will work with other Blyth groups to save our town.

Top Contributor (TC), got most things right and the anti-Northumberland County Council feeling is growing rapidly in the town as the work commences on the market place, following the announcement that the Conservatives who set out to support their red wall MP in the Town now own the Keel Row shopping centre and want to close it and demolish it. That news has gone down like a lead balloon right across Blyth and in its place Blyth will be left with a Community Cinema and Conservative Culture Centre just as people can't afford to go out as the Conservatives economic shambles bites really hard in Towns like Blyth.

TC also understands that market trading is growing for the first time in many years, which is correct according to the trade press, as small traders abandon shops with massive business rates bills to work less days for the same returns on a market stall.

What TC didn’t get right was that his idea of an xmas celebration and a santa giving out presents to children already takes place in Blyth sponsored by the Labour led Town Council who have nothing at all to do with the carry on that's destroying Blyth Town Centre and even less to do with Town Planning.

But both Blyth matters and the Murky codgers have noted that the Town Centre is to be bypassed by traffic in the run up to xmas for 17 weeks from October 2nd, whoopee the tories will have Blyth on its knees even before their culture centre gets a top Tory Councillor to open it now that their red wall MP is no longer standing in the Town of Blyth. 

He has opted instead to run in Cramlington with Killingworth as his Government has abandoned Blyth and have decided to back a battery plant in Somerset Instead of Cambois with a £500m grant, but of Course Rishi Sunak’s billionaire mother in law was a top engineer for TATA and his father in law is a huge investor. But numbers crunched by Electoral Calculus suggest the new Cramlington and Killingworth constituency would have been won by Labour in 2019, even on the party’s then historically poor showing. And as for the present polling, the site suggests Ian Levy MP has a 96 percent chance of losing his place in parliament at the next election. 

Neither could the Conservatives find any takers for new offshore wind farms at their latest open auction last month, slowing Blyth’s growth in that marketplace.

They have not agreed amongst themselves in parliament to invest in a better power grid structure and the lack of vision and direction is stopping homes, new solar farms and onshore wind connections from happening and it's been reported that there may be an eight year wait for those connections including the huge solar farm planned near Blyth’s golf course.

The need for a new Town Centre hotel to house offshore contractors seems to have ebbed away towards the direction of a tourist hotel at South Beach with its proposed new dual carriageway from the beach into the centre of Cramlington bypassing Blyth Town Centre in favour of Manor Walks

We're sure Blyth Matters may have something to say as conservative policy from both Westminster and Morpeth appears to favour other Towns than the largest in Northumberland, Blyth!

The Family who own most of Cramlington are asking the public if they should invest in CRAMLINGTON BY SEA?

 

We the codgers met not at a park bench this week but at a lovely seaside promenade, rich in history with its much raided sand returning via the Northumberland longshore drift, looking better each day apart from a new litter problem, Blyth South Beach.

Our topic of conversation centred on news broken by Conservative Councillor Danny Carr a couple of weeks ago and elaborated on by his colleagues through social media, outlining the transfer of existing Northumberland County Council assets to a local charity who wish to develop retail pods, the announced development of a fast dual carriageway from South Beach into the heart of Cramlington Town Centre, quoted by many as the death knell of Blyth Town Centre has had new nails driven into its coffin this week by the well tentacled Tories from County Hall.

Firstly the Conservative led County Council highways department placed warning signs regarding a fourteen week road closure beginning on October the second for Bridge Street and Waterloo Road in the Town of Blyth, effectively shutting off Blyth’s high street over the xmas shopping period. The bell ropes are already beginning to tighten for Blyth's town centre.

Secondly, Councillor Daniel Carr whom the Northumberland Murky Blogspot told the world on their facebook page ‘does not speak with his near neighbour and supposed colleague Ian Levy MP’ blew out that possibly the largest contributor to the Tory Party in Northumberland, Blagdon Estates owned by energy baron Viscount Ridley’s family who has housed the MP for Hexham Constituency along with the Deputy Leader of ‘Northumberland Conns’ in a nice warm office on their vast estate wish to join the Conservatives from County Hall’s strategic planning process and consult on developing Cramlington on Sea.

This consultation sees a possible huge investment being made through placing a seaside hotel, restaurant, public house and a series of retail pods on land the family owns at South Beach.

The proposed two sets of retail pods will certainly take off and form what Blyth residents have wanted for a long time, a more stable market place offer for their town. The new offer may be a bus ride too far for many and we the codgers expect and have reported on the possible expansion of retail services onto Cowpen Road and at Bebside following the opening of the passenger rail line next year another nail for Blyth's under pressure Town Centre, even before the Tories finish building on the marketplace and pulling down the Keel Row centre.

The application will certainly enhance the current offer at the seaside, now dominated by Greggs empty paper bags and ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ may be a contributor to the consultation. But it's the demise of Blyth Town Centre through the tentacled move from the Conservative ‘Kraken’ who reside mainly in Morpeth and Ponteland (using levelling up funds to wipe it out) seeing the chance to enhance Cramlington further at Blyth’s expense we codgers are concerned about.

But to be fair, if you were a Conservative who would like to see Ian Levy MP win the seat of Killingworth with Cramlington next year at the General Election then why not announce in a similar fashion to the Leader of Northumberland Lib Dems Jeff Reid did when Leader of the County Council in 2013 and label Blyth a dump?

We expect to hear soon from Town Centre Councillors Eileen Cartie and Kath Nisbet who must oppose the changes that are killing the retail experience and possibly the voice of Labour’s prospective new MP for Blyth, Ian Lavery currently the MP for Wansbeck where the Tory PM in Parliament has ensured that 8000 new jobs aren’t going to be created in his constituency as the Prime Minister destroys ‘Greenness’ and the need for Offshore energy growth and a battery plant in Cambois for a further decade.
