In a recent article on social media, Councillor Georgina Hill asked if democracy had now failed as all of Berwick Town Council are now co-opted onto the Council and not elected.
400,000 cut off from democracy through Tory ID plot.
An interim study from the Electoral Commission has found that around 14,000 voters were denied the chance to vote in the local elections after being turned away from their polling station without a valid photo ID - with the true number of those deterred from voting likely to be much higher.
Data from 230 councils revealed that 0.7% of voters were initially turned away, with 63% of those eventually returning. However, almost 40% of polling stations used "greeters" outside polling stations to inform would-be voters of the ID requirements, with data from greeters not recorded, and polling stations using greeters showing lower rates of people turned away.
Separate polling found around 4% of those who did not vote blamed the new ID rules - a proportion which could equate to as many as 400,000 people. The Electoral Commission's head of policy, Craig Westwood, said while definitive conclusions could not yet be drawn, "some of the emerging evidence is concerning".
With a shrinking electorate and ever more co-options onto second tier Councils in unitary council areas is it now time to reset ALL councils? Reset democracy and reach the goal of equality of funding and tax raising nationally?
The boundary commission has almost completed the equalisation of all constituencies and is working to equalise the size of Council Wards, setting wards aside for moment, as the Government of the day has forced Councils down a dark hole financially over the last 14 years then new District Councils could easily be formed to manage services across equalised constituencies to cover all local services including those currently delivered by Parish Councils except fire and rescue which should be shared across a number of new districts and social services should transfer to the NHS whom, now that cuts have removed the ability from Councils to supply decent services are the only body to be able to manage social need and are really best placed to do so.
Moving back to wards, they can be rejigged within new district boundaries to ensure equal representation becomes the norm with each ward represented by a woman and a man. Increasing democracy into the bargain.
Resetting and equalisation will ensure that Council of the future should be able to work together to resolve issues jointly as Government grants can be similar and formulas adjusted in areas of deprivation to level off income to ensure levelling up is a constant and decisive matter that allows all areas to benefit and not a bidding game riding on favouritism designed to be played out on an xbox.
Councillor Hill from Berwick now being a top Councillor on the Local Government Associations Independent Group is now in a position of strength when it comes to looking after the democratic actions of the electorate in future and equalisation and harmony is their mantra. Lets hope she agrees with her organisations policies and pushes them towards greater involvement in politics from everyone and drives out exclusion from society?
