Moving towards seven years since Councillor Peter Jackson the Tory leader told the residents who voted him in that County Hall only needed a lick of paint we find out from a freedom of information request that lick of paint has cost Northumberland Council Tax payers almost £15m in refurbishment and repairs.
Castle Morpeth social media bloggers have been seeking clarification of the spend for a number of years and out on their pages estimates appear to feature the figure of £23M on a regular and ongoing basis.
As this Conservative administration has stripped over £150m from its reserves without any detail issued in public as to where that spend has taken place many are doubtful and have displayed on social media that the County Conservatives may have been weasley with the truth but a ray of sunshine has emerged from the Labour opposition who are allegedly proposing to launch a forensic investigation into the real cost and of course feed the perpetrators to the lions when the truth is exposed after they establish an administration following the May 2025 CC elections.
This huge spend even if the published facts are correct is not the end of the matter as only one wing has been modernised, well painted and carpeted and the other side of the building is still to do and as half a job has come at the cost of losing youth services County-wide, stopping aid to many charitable bodies who used to fill any gaps, set large sums to one side after they failed to deliver a battery plant in Cambois following two failed attempts, will be opening a rail line with half the stations not ready due to cash shortages and the golden thread of a metro link with through ticketing moved back into the file marked ‘beware’ secrets contained within.
This site built for an office workforce four times greater than the County now employ and where the waste of public cash has been paramount to its retention was allegedly worth £40m to be sold off for housing in 2016. Brownfield housing land has gone through the roof since then and this huge site will have to go to begin to resolve the spending spree losses that Northumberland Conservatives have traded on since Peter Jackson wrongly described detail of a lick of paint.
