At our meeting this week a walk in the winter sunshine in Amble brought the codgers group to a discussion topic surrounding the building of 15 ‘Husk’ bungalows in the town.
That evening our team did its usual roundup on social media and found that well known Labour Party members from around the County were very pleased with this movement from County Hall to develop housing on infill sites. But most reminded the Conservatives in charge that the last Labour administration had developed 400+ Council Housing by their last year in office.
Using prudential borrowing and locking in the Housing Revenue Account the Labour Party from 2013-2017 were able to develop 100 council owned homes per year which made a massive difference helping people who needed social housing get a new, well designed and sited ‘roof over their heads’.
The Conservative led administrations at County Hall from 2017 until the present day has abandoned the development of housing stock leaving a gaping ‘black hole of need’ right across the County with huge disputed figures being thrown about by all opposition groups to help prod the Tories into movement on this issue.
Labour Party members also reminded people that Labour wanted to deliver huge numbers of single person units on Council infill sites in areas of need like Amble such as Alnwick, Cramlington, Seghill and on brownfield sites in Blyth, Ashington and Hadston. These homes would allow the grandparents, sons and daughters of local families to live independent lives yet be near to their support groups.
This project was to also include community health and mental health services and develop vibrant mixed age communities within a safe environment using the experience of Nordic towns where this form of independence is well accepted and is proven to work.
