Single Status job evaluation needs a complete overhaul in Northumberland.

 

It's not just for the staff, residents need it sorted NOW!

The financial crash of Conservative led Northumberland County Council is pointed out every day on social media by Berwick Independent Councillor Georgina Hill. She has mounted a very strong campaign  exposing waste and highlighting possible malice from the Morpeth based mob running the Council whose financial mismanagement has even weakened the position of three County Conservative MP’s who expect to be ditched when their collapsed national party eventually calls a general election to try to protect themselves from the ultra right wing ex Brexit-Reform Party.

A lot of the mess is caused by the acceptance of the Councils 24/25 budget which has completely put the brakes on the recruitment of ordinary workers essential to the delivery of services residents want, need and demand. It's become common knowledge on social media that hard pressed managers must put a full business case to the Councils Human Resources Police Force and it seems managers can’t find the time as the pressure to firefight complaints without enough staff has them stretched out on the rack.

Single Status in Local Government is an agreed job evaluation scheme rating workers by responsibility and workload. For many roles in councils jobs have been rated similarly across most authorities nationally but for specialist roles Northumberland’s scheme is considerably lacking. 

Employees of the misled, crumbling and collapsing County Council have workloads well above average and have difficulty managing those colossal lists of duties as time constraints working over such vast geographical areas are incredibly difficult and with departments of the Council down to skeleton staffing levels sickness is commonplace.

Luckily for workers and not residents most Councils across the North-east are home to happy workforces and vacancies are not difficult to fill as revaluations via the single status mechanism have taken place over the years and pay for specialists has risen accordingly.

The latest mess caused by the lack of input into the scheme and with Northumberland Conservatives appearing to be distancing themselves from the Trade Unions who are partners within the scheme does not bode well for residents in Cramlington and Blyth as the County Council is having difficulty recruiting planning enforcement officers who deal with developers to ensure compliance with planning law to enable adoption of estate infrastructure so that Councils can begin to maintain built up areas.

Even when recruitment of these essential workers takes place it's not long before they drift to other Councils who pay more and control workloads to ensure staff are retained and not damaged through overwork.

Although as outsiders we codgers would not like to have Northumberland County Council on our CV’s the use of the Single Status scheme and better HR management of work volumes and closer links with the trade unions may attract workers who may wish to live and work in a beautiful County.

Dog Dirt, Fly Tipping, Grass Cutting, Anti-social behaviour and smooth roads are what people really want from their massive Conservative led Northumberland County Council huge Council Tax payments and the highest rate of Taxation ever from a Conservative Government in office, both now dying on their feet.

Northumberland like most Councils who have a highways responsibility lodged plans with the Government on how they intend to manage resurfacing and potholes both last year and this.

Northumberland who have been accused of stripping out the Councils reserves and giving away cash to non-council bodies to win votes are possibly not in a position to deliver on promises made to Government which in the quoted words of Transport Secretary Mark Harper “ The process is and will be that payments to Councils are reliant on delivering on their submitted plans”. Plans that in Northumberland have not been released to be scrutinised by the paying public.

Mr Harper’s department has just released £300m to Councils for fixing roads last year 2023/24 and has stated in parliament that 5 out of every 6 Councils have lodged plans to access funds this year, to be paid next year from HS2 diverted cash pot of £8.2Billion.

Northumberland whose compensation for pothole damage is rising each year may struggle to fulfill its lodged plan as their share of the pot from last year may run out in an estimated seven months and with the Council running on depleted reserves motoring organisations are asking which areas will suffer? when the responsibility of such a huge highway network with hundreds of bridges relies not only on diminishing funds but also on a reduced workforce due to cuts in other budgets and grants.

The gloomy prediction that this huge Unitary all purpose Council is becoming ever more reliant on high cost emergency pothole repairs and not a planned long term regular inspection regime linked with the localisation of highway repair teams needs to be clarified through the public release of the ‘Pothole Plan’. But most commentators believe this cash strapped secret system deployed by Northumberland Conservatives illustrates they would hate to have residents contact Cabinet members about delays and non-compliance with a plan lodged with their own Government.

The ‘Hesperus’ reborn? as unwelcome Conservative Infrastructure plans across Northumberland will see Labour routing 3 dodgy MP’s living on undelivered promises

 

Hesperus was an iron-hulled, three-masted, passenger clipper ship that was built in Scotland in 1874 and scrapped in Italy in 1923. She was built for Thompson and Anderson's Orient Line service between Great Britain and South Australia. Its mythological demise during a shipwreck was the subject of a poem by Longfellow about vanity and how mankind and nature cannot be separated yet nature always wins when confronted head on by mankind.

It's the natural thoughts of man that are being twisted to believe all will be right if Northumberland’s Tories deliver on at least a smidgen of their infrastructure plans before the general election is called, but it's also in the nature of man to question what has been historically promised to them yet not delivered as the ‘red wall’ loses brick after brick and its collapse is imminent.

Blyth’s Red Wall MP Ian Levy is struggling to step up to the plate now that his regular and ongoing promise to gift the area 8000 new jobs has unravelled and the only creation is a hole where Blyth’s market place once proudly stood. He has deserted Blyth for the new area of Cramlington with Killingworth as seat he’s expected to lose. He’s scrapped his interest in his home town with scaffolding on buildings that will be destroyed to build an apprentice training school for jobs that haven’t and won’t appear. Ruining Blyth’s shopping experience is diabolical as Blyth is Northumberland’s largest town.

Very hurt locals said when we spoke with them “I feel completely let down by the Tories, Brexit and what they call levelling up, my Town is no more”.

“ At least the last Labour council at county hall tried to support Blyth folk; they reopened the giant co-op store which ran down following Thatchers industrial closures and offshoring and opened three very good large useful stores and modernised Poundstretcher. This lot in power has closed Argos, Wilko, Bon Marche, New Look and loads of other shops, for what?”

“Next door in Ashington they have a huge college that churned out engineers for construction projects, mining and shipbuilding work for decades yet the Conservatives want to replicate that long term success by pulling down Blyth and building a college instead of a shopping centre. Surely that will close Ashington college and give nothing to Blyth people unless you own a pie shop to feed students cheaply”

“It's a good job that the 309 and 308 go to North Tyneside's shopping centres at Whitley Bay and Silverlink from our town as we can’t get a pair of shoes, shirts, jeans, blouses or frocks here in Blyth.”

In the North of Northumberland, Let's start with the promises missed for over half of the Counties geography yet run out as a plus by the MP for Berwick Anne Marie Trevelyan on a regular and ongoing basis? That of the installation of Rural High Speed Broadband, a project meant to protect and cosset families living outside of the Counties Towns. 

The aim to keep businesses and families living and working in the countryside is a failed promise using high speed broadband as a catalyst for rural communities nationally that the MP for Berwick has been very vocal in her support for the scheme. It's backed up by a voucher that doesn’t anywhere near cover the costs of supply to farms and rural homes, essential services to deliver business in a worldwide marketplace altered and tweaked until it's lost its way completely.

The North’s MP is completely entwined with her local government team based in Morpeth’s county hall who have been found wanting in most areas. With the Government's own advisor on all things local government, Max Caller slating them following an investigation into what's been going on. Both the North of County MP and the Council led by Conservatives have rolled out the commencement of a short stretch of road improvements on the A1 and failed to deliver for the last 13 years even though she held a top post in the Ministry of Transport. They have been accused of hiding the Councils assets in its own company Advance Northumberland with the Labour opposition group determined to bring the whole kit and caboodle of Advance in house and make it a regeneration department of the Council. Ms Trevelyam has been caught up and is being stained through the mess happening at her Conservative County Council that she can’t shake off.

An alteration to her constituency has brought the Town of Morpeth under her wing. Her local conservatives in trying to buy votes for the general election have offered to subsidise a new sports facility for the local Academy school which they have no control over, it sits a few hundred yards from a brand new public sports centre costing £21m which only opened this year. 

At this juncture we will remind Ms Trevelyan that prior to 2017 Northumberland Labour spent £23m to stop the Town of Morpeth from flooding and built a £35m bypass to help traffic flow in the centre of the Town itself and didn’t win any seats at the 2017 election. She needs to begin worrying now as Labour rolls forward hoovering up her former vote.

In the wild west of Northumberland, The MP Guy Opperman has very little confidence in retaining his seat with Labour climbing all over the lack of investment in his constituency where the Conservative driven economic crisis is being felt very hard indeed and where those who thought they were middle class have begun to realise they are simply rural tax raising fodder for a rotten Government and its local council administration.

Mr Opperman, an MP since 2010 has never bothered to buy a home in his constituency preferring to live in a rich belt in the south. And the tongues that drive opposition to him in Northumberland’s roman wall country have spun the story out that as many of the Conservative Councillors in the West have decided not to run in 2025 remembering that the Conservatives won two seat on the draw of straws allowing them to form an administration that's been in trouble for 7 years and with Conservative supporters drifting to Reform Mr Opperman has no one to aid his campaign as Labours supporters are all over the constituency like a rash.
