This week's run around of known Tory social media and websites from the codgers group (as it has been too wet to meet at our usual venues) has thrown up a snare being set near a rabbit warren to entrap Councillor Daniel Carr by a different faction within his own party.

At a recent meeting of Northumberland County Council, it was reported by known Tories that an Independent Councillor Anne Dale from West Northumberland brought up the matter of the fear felt by older people who will lose their home phone lines in the next round of the Tory rip off Britain issue to ‘push out the digital telephone switchover to get everyone paying for broadband’ in order that investors keep the bucks rolling in’ while the lonely, poor and elderly fork out serious money from their pension or benefits for something they fear and can’t afford to use.

Allegedly Councillor Daniel Carr waxed lyrical on the brilliant rollout of digital technology across Northumberland and how easy peasy the digital switchover will be for residents.

During the roundup by the Codgers we noticed that Councillor Carr was encouraged by his counterparts to go to the press and publicise the rollout, luckily for him, he first ran it out on his social media pages.

As a young man who seems to have an excellent handle on IT and is well financed enough to be able to afford the rollout, he probably has high speed broadband in every room at his home, his youthful exuberance and keenness to get uninterested people to fork out isn't shared by everyone. 

The elderly whose photo is featured on Councillor Carr’s advert and their organisations such as the North-East pensioners association and Age UK are not as blissfully accepting of the switchover and the costs that go with it as Councillor Carr. Neither are groups who support the poor and those with other difficulties who are worried about being able to contact people in an emergency.

Councillor Carr may also have missed the recent round up low pay areas in the Town he represents, Blyth,with Cowpen Ward in Blyth being home to the lowest average family incomes in the North East of England and well entrenched in the bottom 5% of deprived areas in the UK yet digital rollout will force those who struggle to pay their bills now be stuck with another bill (broadband costs) on top of the bills the Tories are forcing up through their greed and protectiveness of investors over people.

Councillor Carr, our advice is that you should back off this campaign until your government coughs up the cash to help those in need but with the right wing press speculating that the autumn statement will bring more benefit cuts and a fudge of the pensions Triple Lock to allow the Chancellor the opportunity to put £700M into his savings account for the General Election your mates who are encouraging you on this are really after catching you with your own personal ‘Ides of March’,we can almost hear you struggling before you utter the words ‘et tu Morpeth Movement’

Northumberland’s ‘Movement’s’ bragging rights on Council Tax help doesn’t cut it with Christians, Conservatives or Age UK?

 

Being an element of the ‘Look at me I’m a Tory’ from Northumberland’s anti ‘Woke’ ‘Movement’ members and ‘we offer the best help with Council tax relief in the whole of the North-east’ has been pushed out under the threshold of County Hall in Morpeth the town central to their golden spend zone of Castle Morpeth.

It could have been an admirable statement to release but with those same Tories not bothering to look at those who need help yet may not qualify for the relief on offer as they are suffering in different ways from ‘National Tory Movement’ failures by Government and those failures are hated by all Conservatives who consider themselves moderate thinkers, Christian Societies, and the well thought of Age UK.

Sitting outside of Castle Morpeth Tory ‘Movement’s’ help or interest, half of elderly people are worried about paying their winter energy bills. Charity Age UK has warned that more than half (54%) of over-60s, that's around 8.9m people are worried that they will not be able to afford their energy bills this winter, with 44% having already cut back on social and leisure activities as the cost of essentials rise. 

Around 2.6m older people have cut back on their telephone, internet, and water usage. Charity director Caroline Abrahams said there is "rising concern about how some older people will cope when the temperature dips and they need to turn up the heat", and that is on top of  "two tough years of this vicious cost of living crisis”. “some older people say they are unsure how they'll get through a third, having run down their savings and made all the economies they can".

The embarrassment of being seen as poor sitting behind decades of managing to pay their way in society stops people accessing help offered by the multi nationals such as Asda, who are set on helping those who ask with very cheap hot food available for one pound but attending warm places such as supermarket cafe’s will be anathema to many.

The long term swing to the right and the UKIPisation via members of the Movement of the Conservative Party in all areas is seen openly as they attack the poor and defenseless in any way they can and have done over the last 13 years, Cameron began the rot as he supported Farage in their quest to remove the European Human Rights Act protection from UK statute, Theresa May was no better in that respect and her Brexit agreement basics failure allowed the nation to support Johnson, a now proven liar and supporter on ‘One Nation’ policy yes a right wing nationalist set of plans and bring him into the Jimmy Saville poisoned world of ‘I’ll fix it for you’. He has been followed by two who can’t shake off ultra right thinking and have destroyed the UK economy, Truss by introducing policy that was hated by the City of London traders leaving the UK to rot economically and brought in ultra rich  and ultra right Sunak who couldn’t win the support of Conservative Party members in a vote for premiership.

Sunak’s support for Bravermans attacks on the poor and those in need is why and where the Conservative’s stepped off the bus. They were quickly joined by Christians and Age UK with food bank growth out of control and children suffering greatly through ultra right policy such as stagnated housing benefit, cutting back child benefit for larger families, the bedroom tax and inflation being out of control now damaging those who believed they could afford this and that, are being controlled by the ‘Movement’ through its economic shackles such as inflation and interest rates.

Recent research conducted by charity Christians Against Poverty, meanwhile, has found that almost half of its clients will fall short of covering essential costs by an average of £85 a week. Bishops and Cardinals have spoken out against the ‘bashing of the weakest’.

Following analysis by the New Economics Foundation which has found that even if Universal Credit is updated in line with CPI inflation from April, claimants may be up to £670 worse off over the year if cost of living payments are withdrawn as is currently planned. The think tank found that if the payments are ceased, 40% of all families will fall short of the "minimum income standard", a benchmark that takes housing and childcare costs into account. 

So we will remind our reader of what Sunak promised last year, He said  “I’d like to tell you my five immediate priorities.

These are the five foundations I know can build a better, more secure, more prosperous future that this country deserves.

• We will halve inflation this year to ease the cost of living and give people financial security.

• We will grow the economy, creating better-paid jobs and opportunities right across the country.

• We will make sure our national debt is falling so that we can secure the future of public services.

• NHS waiting lists will fall and people will get the care they need more quickly.

• We will pass new laws to stop small boats, making sure that if you come to this country illegally, you are detained and swiftly removed.

These are my five pledges to deliver peace of mind, so that you know things are getting better, that they are actually changing”.

With growth flatlining, debt failing to fall, inflation digging in for the long haul, boats not stopping, waiting lists rising and crime and housing not even making Sunak’s top five priorities Alan Sugar’s correct and the Tory ‘Movement’ everywhere needs to get themselves a small boat and drift off into the sunset, after all they already have all of our cash.

It's time to bring back and expand Sure Start The Tory 'movement' decided to kick poorer areas in the teeth to protect investor profits.

 

The Government's latest flagship offering: Free Nursery Hours

Poorer families are being "locked out" of a massive expansion in free nursery hours, with the UK press citing analysis which reveals a sharp decline in not-for-profit nurseries in England's most deprived areas.

State-run and not-for-profit nurseries play a vital role in caring for children with special education needs and cater to the UK's poorest families in areas where average household incomes sit below £30K, but experts warn that the Government's planned expansion of free childcare schemes may be undeliverable unless the staffing crisis in child care and nursery services is reversed and an expansion program of state run schemes is expanded rapidly.

Private Investment funds have more than doubled their stake in the childcare sector paving their way to draw down the Government's cash offer as they do in adult care, leading to concerns that non-profit nurseries will close, leaving the poorest families in "childcare deserts". 

During the spring of 2023 Nurseries across Northumberland reported shockwaves in the industry following the Chancellors expansion plan release in his spring budget. In Northumberland the County council who control and monitor childcare in their 2021-23 plan have decided are not going to assist in growing not for profit places and their report says this: No.  The emerging gap in the north and recent central part of the County has been addressed through a childminder recruitment drive.

Private childminding is one of the most expensive services available costing on or around £300 per week per child, and is beset by lack of inspection across the sector and with Northumberland County Council’s scrutiny panels asking about the loss of full time equivalent jobs in the nursery sector (and not getting answers) we codgers note that the swing by this Tory Council towards private, private, private, is well welded in with the Guardian newspaper reporting this week that ‘Almost third of not-for-profit nurseries in England, which play vital role in caring for children with special education needs, closed or taken over by private firms’. 

The number of not-for-profit nurseries has dropped by 23% in four years, while those run by private companies have increased by 10%. The Government claims to be rolling out the single biggest investment in childcare in England's history, but critics argue that the focus should be on the quality and availability of provision rather than benefiting big business.

Across Northumberland its plans seem to be an expansion of the work the Farmer’s families can take on to boost their income and the narrow gap thinking by Northumberland’s Conservatives will not help families locked into either rural or urban poverty, the fastest growing sector across the County.

‘Secret Cabal’ has no answers to help Lonely Children, Improve Citizenship or aid Councillor Cartie.

At Northumberland County Council’s November meeting  a serious cutback from the Cabal running the Cabinet known as the ‘Movement’ was announced, The closure of youth services County-wide in this time of greatest need for children and young people following on from lockdown and the financial crisis without a thought for and alternative provision.

They were tackled at the meeting by Labour Councillor Eileen Cartie who has vast experience working in the poorest area of the County of Northumberland and the North-east where the average of total family income sits below £25,000 per year, as a community centre manager.

She outlined the effects the removal of organised Youth work has on children and young people particularly the loneliness felt by many who have suffered due to lockdown who attend schools who are also suffering savage cut backs and loss of staff to help children in need.

It is estimated by the trade unions that since 2011 Councils have  removed over £1Bn from youth funding.

The continued reduction in youth services has come at a time when those services are most needed. The risk of child poverty and material deprivation in the UK at a time has risen in recent years, and as children become young people, thousands fail to receive any kind of economic support to get into the labour market. 

By 2015, almost a third of people in the UK aged under 18 UK were at risk of poverty or social exclusion, while huge numbers were experiencing material deprivation. Those numbers of young people have increased enormously since Liz Truss’s economic collapse hit poorer areas of the Country.

Councillor Cartie was quite right as it is clear that deprivation is far more acute among young people. And yet it is this group which has borne the brunt of the government’s austerity agenda, with the Education Maintenance Allowance cut, higher education tuition fees skyrocketing, and housing benefit slashed. Unemployment is a much bigger problem for young people than for anybody else.

But we here at Murky believe Councillor Peter Jackson who was thrown out of the ‘Movement’ was right to say that some of the County Council activities may be illegal as although youth services are not a statutory function the wellbeing of children and young people is, yet the ‘Movement’ members in Northumberland’s cabinet are trying to forget their responsibilities to the young, forget that citizenship is taught by youth workers and cut off the measurement of poverty on families and young people through official lines other than the NHS.

It may be OK for the rich members of the Movement in Northumberland to have dreams that young people who need youth services to combat loneliness and increase their circle of friends can get it by paying for dance or music lessons or by becoming members of their local sunday school or the guides, but all of those alternatives costs money and with over 60% of residents in Northumberland both rural and urban feeling the effects of the disastrous Tory economic crisis, those opportunities aren’t available for most of our young people.

In Blyth Town Centre the Tories are delivering a £9m cinema building that was designed and sold to Blyth residents on the back of being a hub for young people, it will only attract those who can pay for entry, leading to a two tier society among the young in Blyth.

So let's get real and tell the truth, the Movement need to make an announcement that in Northumberland young people don’t matter
