We have broken the back of commerce in Blyth town lets wipe it out on Cowpen Road ?

Decisions taken by Michael Gove and the Tory County Council Leadership whose interests lie in Morpeth and Ponteland their cohorts on the Blyth Town Team now joined by another faceless group the Best Board.

Residents are fully aware following the Town Centre fiasco the Council’s aim is to degenerate the Town of Blyth and drive its population to shop in Cramlington at the County Council owned Manor Walks shopping centre.

A new battlefront for Blyth residents and businesses has been opened up through the planned narrowing of Cowpen Road to supposedly ‘make people fitter’ will mean Blyth and residents from all the other areas who use Blyth’s facilities will now have to be cremated in Cramlington. This is due to the well designed congestion planned for Cowpen Road damaging trade at Blyth’s crematorium its being forced through the Council via a planning application for a crematorium in Arcot, Cramlington, the self gifted application to demolish Blyth’s Keel Row and the proposed narrowing of Cowpen Road to accommodate ever more cycles and their excuse is it will make Blyth residents fitter!

Is it designed to close businesses and cause greater job losses in the Town? The proposal is to remove all right turn pockets Cowpen Road and narrow the highway; the consequences of following that plan without a bypass being in place for Cowpen Road is disastrous for what's left of commerce in Blyth.

WHERE ARE THE CYCLISTS NOW?

Blyth’s has hundreds of people who use cycles, we codgers have also found out that at a recent meeting of Blyth Town Council a report from a Councillor and a letter from the Chairperson of a nationally approved cycle club who is a resident of the Town were read out and a motion was accepted by all parties to oppose the new cycle track and the narrowing of Cowpen Road. That decision was taken by Town Councillors in favour of upgrading the tentacles of SUSTRANS safe routes built in the 80’s 90’s and early 2000’s that cross the Town  and also support the expert cyclists who wish to steer national cycle route one from its crumbling track along the river Blyth through the much safer Blyth Riverside Industrial Estate and pick up its current route  near Bebside Estate, leaving Cowpen Road as the prime access route for emergency vehicles, white vans and tradesmen who repair homes, factories and deliver goods right across the Tyne and Wear conurbation, Northumberland, Durham and beyond.

Blyth’s residents use the SUSTRANS routes to ply the same journeys daily that any alteration to Cowpen Road would achieve such as school travel, travel to work in and home journeys out of town as well as for leisure activities and they pass within a few yards of the new entrance way to the cycling and walking bridge to the new Blyth Bebside station that's the catalyst for this potential damaging plan, keeping Blyth’s cycling fraternity not only fit but  very safe indeed. BLYTH IS THEREFORE ALREADY TRAVEL SUSTAINABLE!

Northumberland County Council has been aware of traffic problems entering and leaving Blyth for several years. The two main roads into Blyth, the A193 Cowpen Road and A1061 Laverock Hall Road are heavily congested with over 20,000 vehicles a day on each road. Two bypass roads are planned but only one, the A1061 bypass from the new South Newsham station to the A189 junction at the Three Horseshoes Roundabout appears to be progressing.

This will still leave Cowpen Road with 20,000 cars a day as those decision makers at County Hall in Morpeth have not planned a new cross town road to steer traffic to this new outlet in the South of the town and the current infrastructure at peak times to get across and around Blyth is under massive strain and congested at all peak times. The lack of realisation is thoroughly galling to local residents. Especially with the Council’s medium term plan supporting road expansion and not road narrowing.

As we codgers hear more we will visit this debacle again.

Labour and other opposition members left out of decision that will cost many Northumberland workers dearly

Taking our codgerly look around social media sites this week we have noticed top opposition members of Northumberland County Council explaining to staff who are being shifted from the Counties Market Towns to fill up the almost empty County Hall on the outskirts of Morpeth, explaining that they were not part of the recent decision making process and were locked out of discussions which will affect the lives of many of their constituents and joint employees.

That decision taken in secret by 9 ultra right wing Cabinet members who on social media seem to be led by the nose by a new Councillor whose the chairperson of Seaton Valley Conservatives without any reasons for its implementation, The decision appears to be backed up by the Council’s new closure of its redundancy policy. It seems the shifts of staff who will have to endure the huge cost burden of travel from this huge counties outlying offices based in market towns quite close to their homes or in many cases working from their own homes and endure the reductions in their meagre family budgets to suit the chosen unnecessary shift to the Tories Palace of Mirrors.

The lack of honest debate with residents trade unions and staff is typical of a county council who employ a number of very highly paid top officers who may have never visited County Hall and sit counting their huge salaries at home in London or the Midlands just like the absentee landlords who left the Irish to suffer through the potato famines.

The cabinet members and their associates who dream up and enjoy these pressures being placed on their staff and workers need to be answerable to Northumberland’s public and the communication through the press that they are looking for cash savings need to be measured against the class structure being developed by this employer, if your highly paid stay at home up to 300 mile away and get paid, if your a lower paid employee travel into County Hall and enjoy the loss in wages, pain and time this idea will bring you as an employee and the effect on your family at home as this decision is a pay cut beyond the norm.

Berwick Councillor right to ask where the £43m to sort out the Berwick Partnership is when 142 teachers are looking to bail out?

Councillor Georgina Hill has expressed concern about the lack of forthcoming funding from Northumberland’s Tory led County Council to resolve issues surrounding the Berwick Partnership of schools including a new 11 - 18 school for Berwick itself.

Industrial action and the weasel words from the administration at County Hall in Morpeth has not been enough to quell the exodus of many brilliant teachers as the cash to construct a new school and further money to bring other partnership schools up to modern standards doesn’t appear to be sitting anywhere near the horizon as Northumberland County Council struggles with is massive debt accrued since 2017. As time runs on, that debt will become Northumberland’s own ‘black hole’.

Councillor Hill’s short question is rushing like an arrow towards Cllr Guy Renner-Thompson, the Cabinet member with responsibility for Inspiring Young People, who said in July 2023 when talking up the changes in the Berwick Partnership: “This investment in world-class facilities will transform education in Berwick and north Northumberland for generations to come.

This must be particularly galling for educationalists from the Berwick Partnership area when there’s no sign of the cash following ‘The Guy’s’ most recent press statement where he is claiming the excellent position Northumberland Academy schools have put education in across the County as some sort of achievement of his own and his hatred of proper statements about schools to be issued by OFSTED in future as he may find longer exposure of the real position of schools will not benefit his own place at Morpeth’s altar of mammon.

Councillor Hill’s concerns are shown to be right as the closure of Berwick Middle School, Glendale Middle School and Tweedmouth Community Middle School  on August 31 2026 complete with Guy Renner Thompsons engineered sneak over of his home town Belford primary school into a different partnership has been arranged to cover his own stooping back.

Those school closures and the loss of teaching staff is part of the Tories plans for the new partnership in the Northernmost part of England and  Berwick High School is to be completed and ready to open on the same date as the other schools closures.

One wag has asked on social media if the new school is to be built of straw as the time scale is against a safe and long lasting traditional school to be constructed in such a short timeframe.

Northumberland County Council has a £130m shortfall to complete the Northumberland Railway Line in the South of the County is a minor part of not being able to cover the costs of this new build promise with the secret cabinet at County hall siphoning off £millions given to an academy trust in their beloved Morpeth,.

Planned borrowing for a new road scheme to whisk Blyth residents to a shopping mall the Council owns in Cramlington after wrecking Blyth’s Town Centre and their in chain current road design to close off Blyth’s supermarkets to road travellers on Northumberland’s busiest urban highway, Cowpen Road is also stretching the Council’s current borrowing requirement, the lack of sufficient 'New Homes Bonus' is stretching the Council's reserves as planning by appeal is the growing order of the day at County Hall and the pouring of cash into pothole repairs that the Tories ignored for seven years when coupled with the massive costs of home to school transport and post 16 travel Northumberland County Council is struggling under the weight of their chosen idiotic glamour projects to deliver ordinary services to local people.

For the people of Berwick the shambolic handling of capital spend and the leaning of service delivery towards a Ponteland and Morpeth corridor hasn’t and won't help Berwicks young people nor its residents as a whole, as disrupted education can affect the future of children for years to come and the only offer on the table at the moment is severe disruption.

Busted Flush Leader offers no help to those in need and still has unplanned cuts to pour fuel into the flames.

In our weekly search on social media of Tories and workers for the County Council we codgers are seeing a dangerous change of behaviour and rhetoric as the coffers at county hall are draining away even more rapidly than sewage is filling our rivers.

The Leader of Council has condemned the change to the Winter Fuel Allowance in the regional press but unlike other council leaders across the north east who have organised funds to help ease this potential crisis particularly as he is in charge of an area sitting above 55 degrees north Councillor Glen Sanderson has offered nothing from the council to bridge the gap and placed the assistance for people unfairly in the laps of local charities.

This goes to show that the last seven years of unrequited glamour projects and the pouring of cash in and around ‘Gadgy Land’ (pronounced Gajjy), centered on the former Castle Morpeth District has failed the residents of Northumberland in all other areas and the new whispers from workers and staff that terror has struck the hearts of those gadgies in charge and they are desperately calling in the few home workers and closing offices countywide in order to fill about one fifth of County Hall to stop Labour reviving their plans to move to a much smaller office to an area where jobs for the Council may help those in need by spreading Castle Morpeth’s wealth outside of the Ponteland corridor.

The Council who have spent £Millions on modernising about a third of County Hall and even more £Millions making workers and staff redundant despite charging residents the highest rate of Council Tax in England have failed to recognise that Councils may have a role to play in society beyond the Viv Nicholson habits of Spend,Spend,Spend by the Council's secret cabinet with most of that spend on spin.

It now appears that the Leader, in his panic and his well publicised poor profits from his farming activities this year, is also papering over the cracks in the Council’s accounts and its huge debts caused by his bad financial management and Glamour Project ignorance, he is now  ordering all spend to be put through a faceless and extremely expensive BEST Board? (it's not my fault pal it's the BEST Board?) will be spun out regularly by his AI team! As he has hardly any humans left to force expensively out of the door. Therefore it is now recognised we now have a Leader of Council worrying about his crops failing whilst tens of millions of pounds of unidentified cuts sit in his Councils budget books with no plan to deliver those cuts other than to bring in a Board to hide behind.

A social media wag has asked the public not to get excited if they don’t get a reply to any telephone requests made to the Council as if she has to apply for a new pen to take down your details, she would like to remind the public that the faceless BESTies only meet every six weeks so a little backlog may exist before your annoyance can be recorded correctly.

In order to slow down the final collapse of Northumberland County Council, the Council is ordering a ‘Pen and Paper Amnesty’ and checks will be made by massively highly paid consultants known as BEST inspectors to make sure staff write on both sides of paper and along the unprinted margins of Council reports that the conservative administrations members don’t bother to read, so the report that suggests the Council tries to help its residents like all the other North-East Councils must have been scribbled on so much that the Leader of Northumberland County Council missed it and is forcing costs to be shouldered by third sector partners whom his administration hasn’t helped since 2017.

Under this Leader’s control he has said “the Council is taking a proactive approach by guiding you when you're in greatest need” to partners?. Propathetic surely?.

Does that sound BEST to you?
